This paper outlines the results of preliminary fieldwork recently undertaken on the eastern margin of the New England tablelands. The survey has concentrated mainly on areas to the east and north of Walcha, a small town 60 km south of Armidale. Further work has also been conducted in the Armidale area and is included here. In this paper I present some of the results of these surveys, in conjunction with some ethnohistorical data, and discuss their significance in relation to previous theories on the occupation and exploitation of the New England region by its prehistoric Aboriginal inhabitants.
