Employment and mobility in the former border zone between East and West Germany The border between the two German states affected neighboring areas for forty years. Socioeconomic and demographic factors have shaped the reorganization of these areas since the border has come down. The spatial reorganization of the labor market and of unemployment involves several processes: an unfavorable demographic trend, a " selective front of integration" the emergence of new "centralities", and the strong heterogeneity of areas along the border. Regional networks are emerging, in particular through migrations related to work and the revival of the zones of influence exercised by urban centers. Owing to their configurations, the areas in this "moving zone" are mutually changing each other even as the border's functions are being renewed. Employment basins and economic centers seem to be becoming related through interdependence, competition and partnership. These relations are favored by the permeability and proximity that have resulted from tearing down the border between East and West Germany
