Kinship in the urban setting - is it still an important factor in the life of the nuclear family? We know from research in different countries that the urban nuclear family does by no means lead a life in isolation; rather, there is much evidence for social relationships with kin and friends. We also have quite a few figures on visiting patterns among relatives - the frequency of such interactions varying proportionately to distance between living quarters within the conurbation - but their relevance for young couples and their children has so far not been ascertained sufficiently. This study centers on several aspects which, the authors suggest, will be apt to reveal relevance of kinship: the mutual seeking and giving of advice; the choosing of godparents; the function of relatives serving as models; the complementary relationship extant between interaction with kin and interaction with friends; the declining relevance of kinship accompanying the advance of a more companionate type of conjugal relationships; and its growing relevance for young families with a job-holding mother. The research population consists of mothers (mean age 35) with children who had just entered elementary school in four local districts of Hamburg
