Pierre Bourdieus Theorie der kulturellen Reproduktion von Klassenstrukturen ist heftig kritisiert worden. Einerseits wird ihr starker Fokus auf der Bedeutung der Hochkultur bemängelt, andererseits wird die Existenz starker Unterschiede in der klassenspezifischen Rezeption von Kunstwerken in Frage gestellt. Die im Zentrum dieser Diskussion stehende soziologische Theorie der Kunstrezeption wird in diesem Aufsatz im Kontext der Theorie der kulturellen Reproduktion von Klassenstrukturen skizziert und auf ihrer Grundlage werden präzise Hypothesen für den Einfluss kulturellen Kapitals auf den Filmgeschmack und die Rezeption von Filmen als Beispielen aus der Populärkultur abgeleitet. Anschließend werden auf der Grundlage einer Kinobesucherumfrage die beiden genannten zentralen Kritikpunkte an Bourdieus Theorie empirisch auf ihre Bedeutung hin geprüft
