This essay uses philological methods to study the historical work of Theodor Schieder. Schieder’s references provide a key to understanding how he thought and worked. The study focuses on the complex relationship between Schieder’s political motivations and the academic character of his research as well as the influence that his biography had on his historical work. In essays and reviews of books from the 1940s, he accommodated National Socialist vçlkisch ideology, but his approach to history remained distant to that of the National Socialists. Schieder’s writings about the historians Leopold von Ranke, Otto Hintze and especially Jacob Burckhardt in the 1950s exerted a formative influence on West German historical scholarship. The theory of constellation research, or Konstellationsforschung, presented in this article argues for the reconsideration of historical judgments on Theodor Schieder and his work
