At the beginning of the 1970s, new social criticism in West Germany accused children’s books, songs, toys and the like of locking children into a ghetto of cuteness and secrecy, cutting them off from social reality. This criticism spurred the creation of new childhood items aimed at opening up age-appropriate access to the adult world for children. In the process, this demand also raised the question of how to deal with social inequalities and hierarchies. This article shows how this new kids’ material culture of the 1970s became a focal point in public debates over social inequalities, and how it promoted engagement with social difference as a necessary part of childhood for both parents and children
