The rather technical term "insurability" borrowed from the insurance industry has had a curious career in risk sociology : For Ulrich Beck and others, the question whether private insurers insure big risks, serves as a yard stick for the difference between risks of "first" or "second" modernity : nuclear catastrophes and climate collapse are not insurable by private companies. The contribution shows that the idea to use insurability for historicization goals is good, but that the way Beck uses it is not convincing. Following the time sociologist Barbara Adam, the contribution distinguishes between the overall (e. g. apocalyptical or progressive) timescapes of a given epoch and the operative time horizons (e. g. closed or open future orientation, project time) in a given group and field of action. The limits of insurability in the history of insurance should not be seen as isolated phenomena but before the background of larger timescapes of society.Athree-step development frompremodern and modern to late modern realities is established, based on printed and archive material mainly from 18th to 19th century German and British insurance history with an outlook onto late modern conditions
