In around 1920, matching profession to personality and vice versa was established as an epistemological model within Swiss occupational guidance. These matching routines legitimised occupational guidance as an expert culture covering both the social and the human sciences. The conceptual and practical combination of personality and profession aimed to produce social and individual stability. The article focuses on the two essential formats of occupational guidance: general and individual counselling. In order to fulfil the promise of stability, specific techniques were implemented for each of those formats
