L'opinion traditionnelle decrivant les societes paysannes modernes comme economiquement retardee, fermee sur elle-meme et fonctionnant en autarcie se doit aujourd'hui d'etre plus nuancee. En effet, il apparait que les paysans en Europe ont souvent ete tres actifs au niveau commercial et industriel, en particulier les paysans de Scandinavie ou la proximite de la mer permettait encore plus facilement de proceder a des echanges
