This study analyzed bases of power in churches using resource dependence theory as a theoretical framework. The data were mainly collected by mail survey of 366 members in 2 Anglo-American (Protestant) churches and 2 Korean ethnic churches located in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The data were supplemented by interviews with the ministers of the 4 churches. Money and voluntary labor service were found to be the most important and consistent variables explaining a member's power in both the Korean ethnic and Anglo-American churches. Intimate personal ties through which one can influence others' attendance (i.e., family and friendship ties) did not appear to provide a church member with power in a church. In general, resource dependence theory was poorly supported in this study. Of the 5 resource dependence hypotheses, only 2 were confirmed by the data. The remaining 3 hypotheses were either not supported or were contradicted by the data. The findings leave us skeptical about the general applicability of resource dependence theory in churches, and possibly in other types of voluntary organizations
