Am I one of those very few writers on the face of this planet-William Faulkner was reputedly one of them-who do not bother to read reviews of their books? Hell, no. I read them avidly, and when I don't get a rave, I take out my voodoo doll and sit up all night pricking it with a sharp knitting needle. Take this, you miserable little philistine, and this, and this! I say, chanting the reviewer's name over and over again. And may you be caught one day in public reading a paperback by John Grisham, renting a Doris Day and Rock Hudson movie at Blockbuster, and playing a Lionel Ritchie song on the juke box at a redneck bar. That is the degree of my rage at, and the kind of embarrassment I wish inflicted on, a reviewer who dares give any of my new books a pan. So I have a bone or two to pick with Sharif Elmusa, who reviewed Exile's Return: The Making of a Palestinian American in the Autumn issue of this journal. Not because he panned my book-that's a reviewer's job -but because, very simply, he didn't get it
