Yemini farmers refer to a traditional star calendar, to define the seasons and timing of agricultural activities, as the « agricultural markers ». Modern almanachs depict this as a system of twenty-eight distinct star periods, and relate these to the lunar zodiacs, the well-known astronomical model of the twenty-eight lunar stations. This association appears to be relatively recent, since a variety of other systems for the Yemeni « agricultural markers » are recorded in historical texts and ethnographic research. The A. describes how this system is supposed to work and compares the contemporary version with one recorded in a 20th-century Yemeni text
