freshwater fish fauna of the region is characterized above all by the predominance of the Cyprinidae (carps and minnows) and their allies. The fauna is rather uniform in its com position throughout the region except for the Song Koi (=Song Hong) drainage, where the fish fauna closely resembles that of southern China including Hainan (Chevey and Lemasson, 1937), and there is a sharp distributional boundary along the Song Koi-Mekong watershed (Banarescu, 1972). The fauna of Southeast Asia shares many genera with the fauna of India, and the fact led Hora (1937, 1944, 1949) and Menon (1953, 1955) to conclude that the Indian freshwater fish fauna in the main originated in and migrated from southeastern part of Asia
