All previous studies on the eity of Rayy are insufficient for understanding its complex history. This article shows the precarious present situation of the archaeological site and offers a new and more complete topographical analysis of two of the most ancient parts of the city, the Citadel and Shahrestan. It also discusses some comparisons with more recent plans from the nineteenth century drawn by Robert Ker Porter and Pascal Coste. That analysis is based upon a new study of the topography, before the present urban and industrial activities destroy and absorb it
