AbstractThe local public library is the most widespread of cultural institutions and the one physically closest to the population as a whole. More than any other cultural institution, the public library adapts itself to its clientele. It has recently added to its heritage of printed works a considerable variety of other cultural delivery systems, including the Internet. These new additions tend to be no more than juxtapositions ; no one, so far, appears to have worked out a way of providing them with integrative or complementary roles. The result is that our libraries are coming more and more to look like societal supermarkets, each one with its own improvised cultural bric-abrac, rather than centres concerned with the cultural development of their users.
