User-based recreation facilities are of paramount importance in highly urbanised societies. In order to plan and administer these facilities it is necessary to both determine the roles of the professionals within these service organisations and elicit the sociodemographic characteristics of their user-clients. Empirical research into this field has been oriented towards quantitative category analysis based upon the fallacious assumption that the relationship between personal characteristics and recreation participation is constant. An alternative research strategy which elicits the underlying processes linking predictor variables to recreation systems functioning within the matrix of a community's social relationships is advocated. The theoretical paradigm which predicates this strategy asserts that a community's social solidarity is a function of its social relationship matrix of which the recreation system is a supportive network. Research exemplifies the local nature of urban community recreation usage patterns thus reinforcing the concept of recreation systems generating social solidarity in «place communities» and ameliorating the urban blight and malaise syndrome. The implications for recreation planning and administration include; the community—macroscopic social institution interface, the structure and function of the family—based urban facility hierarchy and its ancillary community facilities network, the design of management systems to elicit and fulfil community needs, and the institutional concept of community education and development
