Les pratiques de skateboard dans la ville. Éléments de discussion sur les modes d’appropriation des espaces publics urbains

Skateboarders are found in urban areas such as streets, squares and skate parks within the city. However, all urban spaces do not offer the same possibilities for skateboarding practices and that’s why some tend to be preferred more than others. For the purpose of this study, three popular sites known for skateboarding activities in Lyons have been observed: two public squares and one skate park. The whole study is based on in situ observations as well as interviews. It explores the urban objects mobilized by the skateboarders during their activities, the interactions among skateboarders and also with other people. The results obtained allow us to reexamine the role of urban objects in social activities based on the skateboarders’ experiences, and, more specifically, the appropriation of these objects. Two kinds of appropriation are distinguished: appropriation for activities, and appropriation by groups
