The development of leisure research in Canada has been examined by reference to the various stages in the growth and development of the individual human being from infancy, through childhood, adolescence and young adulthood, to maturity. It has been argued that the field of leisure research in this country has progressed from infancy in the early 1950s to the stage of young adulthood in the late 1970s. This progression has been traced through reference to research papers and reports published over this period, a half dozen major reviews of leisure research that have been completed during the past five years, and the appearance and development of leisure research journals, leisure research organizations and graduate research degree programs at Canadian universities. The paper concludes with suggestions regarding the kinds of developments that will be necessary for the field to progress to the stage of maturity
