literature ON post-war British nuclear history includes work on the evolution of Anglo-American joint planning for a general nuclear war with the Soviet Union. Much less attention has been paid to nuclear capabilities and policy for regional or limited war: one area of omission is the Far East.1 Phillip Darby's analysis of British defence policy east of Suez is thirty years old, is not based on archival sources, and makes one peripheral comment on Britain's nuclear capabilities in Asia.2 Karl Hack's study of British defence policy and decolonization in South-East Asia refers only in passing to nuclear matters, and says little about the period after 1957.3 Len Scott and Stephen Twigge, in their work on the command and control of Western nuclear forces, give us a glimpse of the strike planning conducted in this field,4 and Richard Moore explains the overseas deployment of British nuclear weapons, including at Singapore.5 This article explains the development of British nuclear capabilities in the Far East; Britain's attempts to co-ordinate nuclear strike planning in the region with the United States; and British thinking about the overall role of nuclear weapons in Anglo-American relations
