This article focuses on two apparently very different manifestations of this phenomena in the relatively recent history of the peripheries of the former communist zone of the modem world system: armed banditry in Mozambique, and inter-ethnic violence in the Southern republics of the former Soviet Union. It offers an interpretation of such violence, and its significance, which is not based on a cultural or anthropological reading. Rather, it argues that both manifestations stem from the larger phenomenon of Communist-style delinking from the capitalist world-economy
