The period between the 1890s and the 1930s witnessed the apex of European imperialism, the eruption of global conflict, and the rise of national independence movements across colonised territories. Over these decades photography also matured, both as a technology and as a medium used to document and to influence. The five articles contained in this special issue collectively explore how photography interplayed with the other transformations of this era. They examine how photographs functioned both as a means of control and of resistance and reflect on their material nature and the challenges of working with them as historians
