This text approaches the contradictions generated by and surrounding the governmental projects that proposed the assimilation vs. the integration of indigenous groups in Mexican national society. The article analyses the indigenist policies with the greatest impact on Michoacán under Cardenism, emphasizing the specific tensions derived from the implementation of agrarian reforms and educational and “civilizing” projects in the region. Special attention is given to the anthropological and linguistic Tarasco Projects as examples of academic collaboration—and political collaboration—between high-level Mexican and US institutions and agencies
