The recent editions of two major grammatical treatises of John of Garland allow us to situate now more clearly and precisely the grammatical part of his work and to ponder on the authentical or doubtful texts which are still to be edited, as well as on the direct sources of the work, which are to be studied too. John of Garland is a polymorphous grammarian, who writes and annotades his own treatises in the same way as he does other mathers' handbooks. These different activities connected together and the underlying doctrine is always the same. This connection, and the quotations by John of his own works allow us to propose a partial chronology of his treatises and commentaries, and to highlight his publication strategies - particularly, the diffusion of his treatises in England. Indeed, it seems that John of Garland met with no success in French University, which could account for the fact that he needed to publish his works in his native country
