The grammar of the standard language of the Russians arose from two encounters with Western thought. The grammar of Slavon emerged around 1600 in the Polish-Lithuanian state (Vilna, Lvov), and the grammar of the contemporary standard language was formulated during the « européanisation » of Peter the Great in the early Xyriltn Century. The grammars of Slavon (Adelphotes, Zizanij, Smotrickij) were written for the Ruthenian Orthodox brotherhoods as a response to the Renaissance coming from the West : they are a synthesis of a Byzantine (Lascaris) and a Latin (Donatus) development of the grammar of Dyonisios Thrax. The grammar of the contemporary Russian language was probably sketched in Gdansk (a print called Extranea, approx. 1706-1707) and formulated finally in the Academy Gymnasium in St. Petersburg in the 1730's, most explicitely in Anfangs-Griinde der russischen Sprache (SPb, 1731)
