This paper reviews the various kinds of monolingual latin dictionaries used from the 11th to the 16th century, and relates the development of these books. Until the end of the 15th century, two sorts of dictionaries can be distinguished : small and simple ones, which help to memorize meanings and morphology, and big and scientific ones, using disciplina deriuationis to group words into etymological families and giving morphological information, or examples extracted from authentic texts. These scientific dictionaries also show the general evolution of pedagogy in latin language teaching. From the years 1450-70, dictionaries try to classify, in a logical and rational way, the entire corpus of latin words, even if they are not used by authors. On the contrary, between 1470 and 1530, dictionaries are mainly built on quotations and testimonies of the authors' use, and become the second level in latin language learning, coming after reading basic grammars
