Leibniz, when he opposed the occasionalists's conception of the relationship between the body and the mind, entered into a debate that was deeply to influence him when he evolved his theory of the sign. The studies devoted to Leibniz's work have not so far made full use of this line of interpretation. Besides, the examination of the debate between Leiniz and the occasionalists makes it possible to draw a (to my mind, fruitful) parallel between the theories of language and the theories on the mind-body relationship in 17 th century philosophy. This paper is meant to be the first step towards the reconstruction of the links between the two domains at the time
