Not all languages have adjectives as a separate part of speech, but all present 1) epithetical structures, given the ability of languages to condense information, 2) ways of expressing stative properties. This situation leads us to ask 1) on a descriptive level what criteria are to be used to define an adjectival class, 2) on a theoretical and interpretative level, what kind of syntactic constants exist (relations between adjectives and the epithetical function, the predicative function, between adjectives and verbs vs nouns, embedding or agreement features), what sort of semantico-logical constants (expression of properties vs substances, stativity, gradability , status of abstract terms), and so on, beyond the various types of languages
