This article sets out to analyze the discourse of the two leading candidates from the first round of the Brazilian presidential elections during the second round of their electoral campaign from November 28 to December 14, 1989. This analysis centres around two main questions: Firstly the means employed by the two candidates to give material shape to their characters, and secondly the construction of the other in the discourse of the opposing candidates. By concentrating on these two key questions, the paper aims for a better understanding of one of the central issues of political behaviour which can be expressed by the naive question - what makes an ordinary citizen vote for one candidate and not for the other
