This article examines changes in ideas about how to define European culture and the role of cultural legacies in contemporary ethnic mobilization and region-building in the Swedish Torne Valley. A major point made is that the notions of civilizational constellations and multiple trajectories to modernity are particularly useful in analysing Bengt Pohjanen's contribution. The conclusion presented is that Pohjanen consciously activates the Orthodox Christian tradition, with its roots in Byzantium and concepts inspired by contemporary postcolonial cultural critique. This practice relates to a critique of European mainstream philosophy and the project of modernity, which have effaced, or neglected, Eastern and Slavic cultural legacies that have had an enduring presence over the ages in the Barents Region. The Byzantine Orthodox spiritual tradition, elements of the Fenno-Ugric tradition, cultural critique, postcolonial theory and region-building all intersect in Pohjanen's present-day construction of a Tornedalian aesthetic
