Since the early 1990s, four conferences have been organized and two volumes of essays published (Dutt 1994a; Setterfield forthcoming) that have brought together contributions to the field of political economy. Contributors to these conferences and volumes of essays have included economists such as Lance Taylor (New School University), Peter Skott (University of Massachusetts, Amherst), and Robert Blecker (American University), whose works are associated with a variety of research traditions in economics, including structuralist macroeconomics, Marxian economics, and post-Keynesian economics. At first sight, then, the term analytical political may appear to be little more than a flag of convenience for an otherwise disparate group of heterodox economists. But, in fact, the term is no mere contrivance: rather, it has substantive meaning as a field descriptor. Specifically, political economy consists of non-neoclassical economic theory which uses formal, mathematical analysis (Dutt 1994b: 1). The purpose of this brief essay is to provide an introduction to the field of political economy. In so doing, it seeks to both reiterate and embellish the earlier sentiments of Dutt (1994b) regarding the meaning and nature of political economy. The paper is organized as follows. The next two sections consider
Economics · Epistemology · Field (mathematics · Meaning (existential · Neoclassical economics · Original meaning · Political science · Politics · Positive economics · Economic Theory and Institutions · Economic Theory and Policy · Law · Philosophy · Political Economy and Marxism
