Western culture has supported negative stereotypes about older people, similar to those about others with little power such as women, blacks, gays, and the physically and mentally challenged. The author examines some of the ways in which she has used her life experience and professional studies to counteract these myths. She suggests that a more positive view of aging can be gained by expanding the empirical studies of childhood resilience to the later years. The author proposes using a systemic model of human development and refraining of attachment theory to reflect a more contextual view of loss. Finally, the author presents empirical evidence about the realities of the aging process, its challenges, and Opportunities
