In this article I describe the development of a project designed to improve the educational opportunities of young girls in a rural village community in West Africa. Using a metaphor of witnessing (Weingarten, 2003), I describe my experiences working on a project that resulted in the formation, with host country nationals, of a committee to promote girls' education in the village community. From a first-person perspective, I outline the formation and implementation of the work, and present some of the interactions in the village system which informed and shaped the final project. I begin the article with a brief discussion on the value of taking a civic-minded, human rights perspective to one's work as a systemic family therapist
