Images and/or photographs often accompany Portuguese American autobiographical texts; however, these aspects of the text are often overlooked by critics. This essay examines the extent to which Charles Reis Felix chose to include photographs or images in the text as a strategy of authorial control. The paper also considers the effect created by the inclusion of images or photographs that might not match the content of the text and whether the combination of text and photography can be said to uncover something hidden, such as an aspect of the author's self, or the importance of an event in his or her life, that might have been otherwise overlooked by the examination of the text alone
