PASSION AND PERIL: TRANSGRESSING BOUNDARIES AS A FEMINIST SCHOLAR-PRACTITIONER' RITA M. GROSS In the fall of 1992, the imminent publication of my Buddhism Afier Patriarchy brought to the fore a "double-bind" facing scholars like myself who transgress traditional boundaries. The text offers a recon- struction of Buddhist tradition and understanding which decenters androcentric privilege. This bold move would not be appreciated, I feared, by any of the constituencies which the book might reasonably be expected to address. Some historians of religion, persuaded by the possibility of "objective" (i.e., unsituated) scholarship could dismiss the book because I am a practicing Buddhist
