A controlled study was conducted in order to determine the comparative usefulness of an American college desk dictionary (AHD) and two monolingual learners' dictionaries (LDOCE and COBUILD). The subjects were 207 first year American college students, all native speakers of English, who produced 4140 sentences in a production task using the target vocabulary items. This research report informs lexicographers of verifiable strategies that learners employ when they look up words in a monolingual English dictionary, but more importantly, attests to the relative benefits of LDOCE and COBUILD over AHD for American students
