One of the expressed aims of Carrie Howse's Rural District Nursing in Gloucestershire, 1880–1925, is to train a spotlight on to a hitherto neglected group: the district nurses of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century rural Britain. This clear, well-researched and often entertaining volume uncovers previously unknown documentary sources and, by combining them with better-known nationally significant archives, develops a readable and convincing narrative. At the time Howse was writing the thesis on which this monograph was based, only the somewhat dated works of Mary Stocks (A Hundred Years of District Nursing, 1960) and Monica Baly (A History of the Queen's Nursing Institute, 1987) were available. It was, no doubt, just as her book was going to press that Helen Sweet and Rona Dougall's Community Nursing and Primary Health Care in Twentieth-Century Britain (2007) appeared to offer us important insights into the work of district nurses in a range of scenarios in a later period. Howse's work complements this larger overview by offering a smaller-scale study of one aspect of the subject and by focusing, for the most part, on one geographical area
