The Italian city-states were vital centres for the development of practical and theoretical medical knowledge in the later Middle Ages, as well as for the emergence of large-scale hospitals and urban public health programmes. Marilyn Nicoud’s monumental study of medical thought and practice in the duchy of Milan in the fifteenth century greatly enhances both our knowledge of medical culture in this leading city-state, and our understanding of medicine and health in late medieval Italy and Europe more broadly. The book is organised into four chapters, dealing with the relationship between the court of the Visconti and Sforza dukes of Milan and the Faculty of Medicine of the recently-established University of Pavia; the intellectual production of physicians serving at the court; the manner in which physicians cared for the bodies of the dukes and others at court; and responses in the duchy to recurrent outbreaks of pestilence. The volume concludes with more than 200 pages of appendices, including editions of sources, lists of manuscripts, a list of professors and chairs in medicine at the University of Pavia, and other valuable information
