Numerous works have been published on forced migrations. However, few adopt the innovative approach of this book which compares urban and rural settings in Sudan and Egypt and examines Eritrean and Ethiopian forced migrants’ contrasting perceptions of space and time. Drawing on several years of solid fieldwork, Le Houérou demonstrates, in a lively writing style filled with ethnographic details, how opposed dwelling strategies influence the preservation of ethnic identity, memory and history among these groups. As in her former study of Italian soldiers who remained in Ethiopia and experienced historical amnesia, Le Houérou analyses the ‘loss of history’. By looking at the reinventions of culture and history in exile situations, this study seeks to understand how the setting changes the experience of migration. The author focuses here on a particular marginal group to understand power constructs in Ethiopia. Yet these ‘excluded’ are mostly elites from Mengistu's entourage who fled after 1991; we are far from subaltern history and post-colonial claims from groups silenced, marginalized or repressed in their country, thus perhaps limiting comparison with other exiles
