Taiwanese ‘sports stars’ have been receiving national media attention for over a decade. In particular, the so-called Honour of Taiwan has been especially celebrated: for the media they have epitomised the nation's strength, symbolised its self-belief and represented its self-assertion. This essay explores the Taiwanese media reaction to an incident at the Guangzhou Games involving the Taiwanese athlete ‘super-star’ Yang Shu-chun, which reveals another aspect of this media attention and exposes national jealously, distrust and dislike – sport seemingly a surrogate for political point-scoring.Keywords:: Guangzhou 2010Yang Shu-chunTaiwanese mediaregional antipathies Notes 1.
