Sport in socialist Yugoslavia was very popular. However, there is limited research to trace the representation of athletes in its sport governing bodies. Therefore, the aim of the paper was to address this research gap by analyzing the historical developments of sport and to locate athletes within relevant political landmarks of sport, political processes, institutional arrangements, and sport governing bodies. The results of the study highlight key actors, institutional arrangements, and processes that shaped the self-managerial governance model and nominal role of athletes. The conclusion is that the structures of sport governing bodies and institutional arrangements were inseparable from the Communist Party of Yugoslavia’s development path and agendas
