This study examines the impact of gender on attitudes towards marriage and divorce in the United States, Great Britain, West Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Italy, and Ireland. The results suggest a basic similarity in attitudes across nations and gender differences only in relation to divorce attitudes. For these seven countries at least, while gender is an important factor in explaining attitudes towards divorce, it has no significant impact in relation to marriage attitudes
