The name of Vladimir Grigor′evich Orlov (1882–1941), the Russian ‘Ace of Spies’, was attached to a series of sensational affairs of disinformation and espionage in inter‐war Europe, including the notorious case of the Zinov′ev letter and the more obscure scandal of the Brotherhood of the Russian Truth. Indeed, disinformation and lies permeated Orlov’s life to such an extent that biographers have had difficulty in distinguishing between fact and fiction. This article attempts to make a critical inventory of what can be known about Orlov and suggests a new hypothesis about his behaviour that takes into account both fact and fiction
