Nikolai Vasil'evich Chaikovskii was one of the outstanding activists in the populist movement. The creator of the concept of bogochelovechestvo and a practitioner of religio‐communistic experimentalism, he was among the originators of the Parties of Socialist‐Revolutionaries and Popular Socialists. He was called ‘a Tolstoyan before Tolstoi’, ‘the grandfather of the Russian Revolution’ and ‘the father of Russian co‐operation’. During his 75‐year lifetime, he got to know, see and experience a great deal. Devoting the greater part of his life to the revolutionary‐emancipatory struggle, N.V. Chaikovskii in his declining years entered the camp of the enemies of the revolution, became an outstanding activist in the anti‐soviet movement and joined in several White Guard governments. This is an astonishing political metamorphosis whose origins and causes are investigated in this article
