This study on the meaning of umma (community) seeks to offer insight from the tradition of Islam for our current global moment and the need for concepts that encourage a sense of global solidarity without, however, demanding the uniformity that the author, Jomaa, associates with the modern nation state. Ummah has much to offer not as ‘the solution’ for the prevailing sense of a divided globe but more so as a lens through which Muslims and non-Muslims can imagine themselves together on the global stage as partners for the good of all. The body of the work consists of four chapters. The first two analyse references to umma in the Qurʾān and their interpretation by Muslim scholars in the past and the present. The first chapter looks at verses from the Makkan period prior to the emigration to Madina, while the second chapter looks at verses from the Madinan period
