It is Sunday, 6 April 2014, just after 8 p.m. On their sofa in Brighton, friends Chris and Stephen are watching the television, filmed by the cameras from Channel 4’s Gogglebox—a reality series which shows viewers’ reactions to TV programmes. On their viewing list for this week is a special episode of Antiques Roadshow, set at the Thiepval Memorial in northern France. The presenter, Fiona Bruce, meets experts and visitors with artefacts connected to the First World War, including portraits of military horses and bronzes of soldiers originally modelled from trench clay. Chris [baffled]: There seems to be a lot of stuff revolving around the First World War at the moment. Stephen [drily]: ‘That’s cos it’s the anniversary’. As usual, dissecting something on the page wrecks the comedy. At the time, it made me laugh like a drain. Chris did not know the half of it. As he spoke, the First World War bandwagon was still gathering pace. The bestselling books were already out, the TV series had started, and the arguments about the ‘right’ way to commemorate the war were well under way—but the cultural presence of the First World War in spring 2014 was nothing compared to the avalanche unleashed to meet the centenary of outbreak of hostilities during that summer. At least in 1914 they had thought that it would all be over by Christmas
