This two-volume edited collection of essays on the trade union movement represents a significant contribution to the literature on post-war British history. Given the prominence of trade unions in the twentieth century there is still little coverage in general academic texts on the period. Accounts of trade union politics tend to rely on outdated analyses or merely rehash accepted myths. This has also been the case in terms of popular history, most recently in Dominic Sandbrook's Never Had It So Good (2005) and Andrew Marr's television documentary History of Modern Britain (2007). There seems to be an overwhelming popular and academic consensus that the actions of particular trade unions had a detrimental impact on British society. The contributors here provide a more complex picture of collective bargaining, solidarity and political action that draws on a number of disciplinary approaches including history, sociology, political science and management studies.
