The foundation of the Centre d’information et de documentation jeunesse — CIDJ (Centre for youth information and documentation) results from three factors : the constitution of a «youth state policy » , the institutional competition between the different public bodies in charge of this policy, the may 68 crisis. The CIDJ, designed to adress young people information needs, has simultaneously had to define the width of its missions, train its crew to new jobs, and define its function in a crowded institutional context (ONISEP, ANPE, etc.). The CIDJ, hesitating between two general functional forms — all-purpose centre or open-to-all position — tries to fulfil its missions and to find its place among other public bodies
