Attention is focused on the Malaysian government's efforts to entice the private sector to play a greater role in redeveloping squatter areas and in providing low-cost housing. The Privatization Squatter Redevelopment Scheme of the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur is outlined and its implementation examined in one squatter area—Kampung Mariyamman. The response to the impact of forced resettlement on squatters is considered from the perspective of both those who have benefited and those who have suffered from the privatized redevelopment process. The case study highlights that state privatization policies can have important consequences for local communities
