Recent economic reforms and restructuring in China have resulted in significant changes in the nature and efficiency of farm production. In southern Jiangsu (SUNAN), a region developing and urbanizing rapidly, farm family income is highly dependent on off-farm employment. In places, this has led to stagnating agricultural production and productivity. Such a pattern appears consistent with experiences of other Asian countries undergoing structural shift and rapid urbanization
