There is perhaps no more complex human/animal social relationship than that between humans and dogs. This paper looks at the relationship between humans and greyhounds. In particular it focuses on the representational terrain of the greyhound to analyse two opposing, yet interlinked, representational frames; that of greyhound ‘racers’ and that of greyhound ‘rescuers’. In doing so it investigates the relationship between what the author has identified as the ‘noble and ancient’, ‘working-class emblem’, and ‘Santa's Little Helper’ greyhound narratives
